Bags of Love
Updated: Aug 17, 2016
“It’s My Very Own” is an outreach ministry to displaced children. It is dedicated to making their lives a little brighter at the time of removal from their home. It was inspired by the growing need of children in our communities who are displaced due to the poor choices of their parents or guardians. Children orphaned by a parent’s drug addiction, or perhaps by abuse or neglect often cannot remove items from their home such as their toys, clothes and personal items. The Bags of LOVE are provided to local agencies that are responsible for removing children from their home. The agency sends the bags of love by the social worker who gives the bags to the children once they are removed from the home. The bags contain items that could meet the immediate needs of the children and help ease their transition from their home.
In the year 2000, almost 250,000 children were removed from their homes in 46 states across America. This ministry affords opportunities for large groups of volunteers to assist in sewing duffle bags and quilts, receiving and donating items for the bags, and preparing the bags for distribution.
“It’s My Very Own” provides Bags of Love to help with the immediate needs of displaced children. Bags of Love are handmade duffle bags filled with items that help ease the pain and suffering of each child.
Each handmade Bag of Love contains items that are age and gender appropriate. There are five different age groups for boys and girls:
Infant – 17 months
18 months – 3 years
4 years – 7 years
8 years – 12 years
13 years – 17 years
Though the bags are specific to age and gender, they all contain the same categories of items:
A handmade quilt
Personal items
Two new toys
 A stuffed animal
Your first step is to contact the local child protective agency that is charged with removing children from their home. Ask if this is a program they can use. Most offices will be thrilled with your gift of Bags of Love.  Social Workers have a very difficult job. Having bags this special to present to the children who are removed from their home makes their job a little easier.
Each chapter of “It’s My Very Own” is supported by the community it serves. Find out what resources your community has to offer.
